INTRODUCTION

Journalism for Social Change (5 ECTS) is an online course initiated by Vikes (The Finnish Foundation for Media, Communication and Development) and IPS Finland as an integral part of their project called Kulmakivi.

The pilot course was organized in spring 2010. In 2011, the online course is  running 7.3-31.5, with ca. 40 Finnish journalism and communication students, exchange students and Ghanaian journalism students participating in it.

The spring 2011 course is organized by Turku University of Applied Sciences, Degree Programme in Journalism,  in cooperation with the Ghana Institute of Journalism. The lecturer in charge of the course is Pirita Juppi, Principal Lecturer of Journalism(pirita.juppi@turkuamk.fi).

During the course students learn to understand and appreciate the importance of mass communication, especially of journalism, for freedom of expression, human rights, global and social justice and responsibility, democracy and social changes.

Interaction and dialogue among the diverse student group is emphasized in learning assignments.
